Volunteer House – Zambia, Africa
Volunteer House in Chiawa, Lusaka Province, Zambia, Africa.
After the profound experience of volunteering to restore the chicken coups for the village in Chiawa, Zambia we were asked by Direct Impact Africa to donate Architectural Services to help with the design of a volunteer house.
The guest house will provide shelter for future guests that want to contribute and assist in the area. The structure had to be designed keeping in mind that only very limited locally available materials could be utilized. All concrete blocks were made on site by the locals with molds. The roughly 210 square meter building has a very simple rectangular floor plan with a large open space in the center and a bedroom block on one side and a kitchen/ guest room block on the other. The central open space that is covered with a large thatch roof functions as the living space for the volunteer house and also as a new shared communal area for the village. The house is scheduled to be completed in the summer of 2017. More pictures of the completed projects are coming soon.
